I was referred to the Hixon Law Firm through my company EAP program and found the experience to be deeply demoralizing. I first spoke with the receptionist who took down my information and stated Mr. Hixon would follow up with me the same day, which he did not do. When he did finally contact me, he was terse, impatient, and rude: Our conversation over the phone lasted a total of 9 minutes, and it was abundantly clear that he had no interest in wanting to provide me with legal council, let alone representing me as a client. He did not express any concern for why I was seeking legal advice or ask me any concerned questions to better gauge my situation: It seemed like he was ready to be done with the conversation before it even began; as though it was an inconvenient formality he needed to get over with so he can collect whatever consultation fees the referring agency might provide him. As someone who belongs to the LGBTQ+ community, I couldn't help but wonder whether he was discriminating against me. It felt like it went beyond mere professional indifference: There was a coldness to his tone that I've experienced in the past among homophobic cisgender men. I would not recommend this law firm to members of my community. I see that others have reviewed him positively, but in my experience of him, he lacks the minimal requisite empathy necessary to build an effective client-attorney relationship.
